It’s Awards season and the Oscars are just around the corner.

The Annual Academy Awards began in 1929, with the first ceremony being nothing more than a dinner party. With around 270 attendees, 15 statues were handed out to film makers for their work between 1927 and 1928. Compared to the evening-filling program nowadays, the first Oscars seems quite a minor event – it only ran for 15 minutes!

Over the years, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) added more and more categories to honour people working in the film industry. Categories like ‘Best International Feature Film’ and ‘Best Original Screenplay’ were included in the 1940s, whereas ‘Best Animated Feature‘ made its first appearance in 2001.

Nevertheless, for most viewers the highlights of the ceremony are the ‘Best Picture of the Year’ category and seeing who takes acting gongs home.

Over the 91 ceremonies, dozens of actors and actresses have been honoured in the four acting categories. And there are clearly some artists the Academy can’t get enough of (everyone has their favourites, right?)

One of the leading ladies in the film industry is Meryl Streep, with an incredible 21 Oscar nominations and 3 wins. But there are other actors and actresses who’ve won more than one Academy Award or have been nominated more times than you might be aware of. Did you know that Amy Adams has already been nominated 6 times without winning any award?
